Michoacán is the sixteenth largest state of the 32 constituent states of Mexico with the total area of 59,928 km². It has borders with the states of Colima and Jalisco to the west, Guanajuato and Querétaro to the north, México to the east, Guerrero to the south-east, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.

The southern facing beaches and points of Michoacan have been luring American surfers south for years. You are totally reliant on the SW swell train from the southern hemisphere here and / or localised windswell which can be a little frustrating and summer flat spells are common. The lack of crowds will soon make up for that as you paddle into your first balmy wave.

Some great, cheap resorts here, Mexican as opposed to US ones that will offer you a nice change of pace and a bit of change left in your pockets as well.

To make the most out of your journey, try to travel primarily by car, plane or bus. Toll roads can be relatively costly, but they are the best (much faster and better maintained), if you choose to go by car. Just note that near the borders with the US and Guatemala there are several checkpoints operated by the Mexican Army searching for illegal weapons and drugs. Also it's not recommended to drive at night time. Chances of hitting an animal at night time are usually much higher than during the day, so drive carefully.

Plane is a good option, as you can manage to get ridiculously cheap fares if you book in advance. If you have to go by bus, try to take the bus called DIRECTO, they are the express ones.

There are no real hotels, but you can get a room for 100 to 300 pesos in one of the many local houses near the beaches.

There are alsp plenty of palapas (simple wooden structures supporting a palm leaf roof) that can be rented for about 30 to 40 pesos per night per person, with that price, you get basics - tent space, showers and toilets.

The region has the tropical rainy climate, with cool summers in the eastern part of it. So pack cool and warm clothes and don't forget to take waterproof clothes/gear/backpack. Definitely take along some bug repellent spray, good sunscreen, a hat  and sunglasses. You’ll need short sleeved t-shirts, shorts and long trousers (pants) and probably a light jacket or pullover for the more blustery days and evenings and sun cream for days out on the water. In winter bring long trousers (pants), warm pullovers, warm waterproof coats, scarves, hat and gloves!!

A small backpack makes a good carryon bag and will be useful in daily life. Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes which will be great for walking.
