Mark: Map of the three major islands located off Perth, WA, 31 January 2008

Located in the south west area region of Western Australia, Perth is one of the most isolated state capitals in the world. It has a population of 1.5 million residents and contains around 70% of Western Australia's population.

Perth is based around the Swan River on a flat coastal plain down from the Darling ranges. The many uncrowded beaches along the Perth coastline also help define the lifestyle, ie. Perth is laid-back, quiet and safe.

Perth is often the first point in any WA based surf trip, few surfers spend a considerable amount of time here, opting for the magical reefs to the north and south of the Perth region. Offshore islands such as Rottnest and Garden Island offer excellent options for those with a few days in town; the location od these islands granting full access to the roaming SW swell systems of the Southenr Indian Ocean

Metro Perth offers several classic breaks on the offshore islands in the area. Unfortunately these islands tend to attenuate much of the swell that reaches the mainland with serious surfers trecking north and south, but when its on its on - and everyone will be on it as well.

The whole coast here is ideally placed to take full advantage of SW depressions and swell trains spraying out from the Antartic and peppering the coastline. May to September will be your prime season for these swells with rarer NW swells courtesy of descending Indian Ocean cyclonic systems more common from Dec-Feb. Onshore winds courtesy of the enormous inland deserts are very common in summer and sometimes there is just no beating them, no mattter how early you get up. Winter is better with morning offshores common but it is rare not to see some onshore activity late in the afternoon. Enjoy the reefs and relish the points, easily some of the best Australia has to offer.

Perth is a vibrant and pumping city, it is also the worlds most remote city and is indeed closer to Jakarta than Sydney!

The city is insanely popular with backpackers and countless choices of hostels have sprung up to cater for this offering clean and cheap living in the city centre. Fierce competition has kept the prices down and the longer you stay loyal to one the cheaper it gets. Caravan, camping and holiday parks are also available on the outskirts of the city for budget accommodation for families and many are on bus routes into the city for those without transport.

There are also a full range of bed and breakfast and guesthouses scattered in and around the city centre  and outer suburbs. Needless to say, in a modern clean city such as perth, top end luxury hotels are plentiful for those wishing to splurge some serious cash.
