Surfing in on the island of Fuerteventura is all about shallow waves over volcanic lava reefs. The waves here lurch out of deep offshore waters and explode onto these perfectly formed platforms in a similar way to that of Hawaii in the Pacific, hence earning Fuerteventura, along with its neighbouring Canary islands, the Hawaii of the Atlantic. There are a few mellower waves around the island suited more to the novice, but all waves here break over reef.
Fuerteventura is also a very popular tourist destination and therefore the number of hotels to choose from all over the island, the great waves and perfect weather has seen an explosion of surfers in the water. In the past this had lead to tensions in the line up amongst the Island locals but possibly not as heavy as some of the other Canary Islands. In general this shouldn’t be a problem to you if you bring plenty of respect with you and leave the ego at home.
where to stay

Accommodation is cheap in Fuerteventura, you could pretty much stay for just over €25 a night. Depending on where you want your place to be close to, there are several choices you can make. There are apartments close to the town centre, beach, restaurants and just about a 10 minute taxi ride to the airport and there are restored houses further away from the town centre but quieter and relaxing.
For backpackers, there are a few hostels around.
