São Tomé Island measures about 854 km², São Tomé Island is the largest island of São Tomé and Príncipe.

There is a population of about 133,600 or 96% of the nation's population, on this island.

The nearest city on mainland Africa is the port city of Port Gentil in Gabon located 240 km to the east.

São Tomé and Príncipe uses the Dobra, which is a restricted local currency used especially for importing and exporting.

The import of foreign currency is limited and you may export only up to the amount you import.

Some establishments require payment in US Dollars (USD). Travelers' cheques are not recommended.

A small handful of hotels exist in the capital.

Opulent resorts are available at the very northern and southern extremes of Sao Tome and Principe, the small island of Ilheu das Rolas, and at Ilha Bom Bom off the coast of Principe.

A new independent 3-star-hotel which is also recommended is Hotel Agôsto Neto located in central São Tomé City.
