general information

Jan Juc beach is often the butt of jokes regarding poor quality surf, and while the waves aren’t classic, it certainly isn’t as bad as some people would have you believe. The waves are ideal for beginners, and on the right day the surf can be very enjoyable for surfers of all levels.

Jan Juc is a mellow beach break, with shifting banks. For the most part the banks are average, but there are surfable waves here most of the time. Unlike the surrounding reefs, Jan Juc can be surfed when the swell is tiny. At five to six foot (double overhead), the surf gets out of control and loses its shape.

The local grommets surf Jan Juc particularly well, as their 30kg bodies and 5 foot long surfboards suit the waves perfectly. As for all the fully grown humans, the waves often lack power and/or size. The surf is best at two to four foot (waist high to just over headhigh). In regards to equipment, short-boards, fishes, and long-boards are all adequate.

Much like Torquay Point, Jan Juc is an extremely popular summer beach (December to February), and holiday makers swarm here. There is a Surf Life Saving Club at Jan Juc who have the unenviable job of trying to control the summertime chaos. Surf schools also frequent the beach.

Jan Juc is located just off Carnarvon Avenue, and it is easy to find if you follow the signs. There is a large car park on the cliff top overlooking the beach and stairs down to the sand.

When searching for surf in the Torquay area, if all else fails, your saving grace may well be the picturesque beach of Jan Juc for a fun small wave.
