general information
Bird Rock is an excellent little wave just west of Jan Juc beach. It’s a consistent right-hand reef break, and is your best chance of finding a barrel in the Torquay area.
There is a lookout on the cliff top directly in front of Bird Rock, this is a good place to check all the waves from Jan Juc to the east, to Boobs in the west. You can even see Winki Pop far off in the distance from here.
The waves are short, but what it lacks in length, it makes up for in quality. The Rock, as it’s known, becomes crowded with only six guys in the water, as the take-off area is the size of a toilet seat. The wave produces a good round barrel on the takeoff, then walls up nicely down the line allowing a surfer to crack the lip, and make a couple of big cutbacks.
The stairs to the beach are just east of the look out. Paddling out is easy - simply walk across the reef and paddle out behind the wave, just to the west of the peak.
On a low tide, at three to four foot (head high to head-and-a-half), Bird Rock is at its best. If the waves get any bigger it breaks too far out – it’s still surfable but an average wave at best.
Bird Rock Café is located not far from the lookout. The café has been there for years, and it’s well worth stopping in for a feed.
Bird Rock is always worth checking when looking for waves in the area, as it is absolutely one of the best waves on the Surf Coast.
