general information

Sparrows is a fun wave located 100 metres west of Bird Rock. It’s not as good as ‘The Rock,’ but that has its benefits- fewer people in the line-up and a less competitive crowd.

Sparrows is a slow breaking right-hand reef break, ideal for intermediate surfers. Best on the same conditions as Bird Rock - three foot (head high) and low tide - it’s a short wave that becomes very shallow on the inside. The reef is relatively flat and not prone to injuring surfers. When it’s small you’ll get one or two good turns in, and maybe even a little barrel right on the inside.

As the swell becomes bigger, Sparrows becomes a better option than neighbouring Bird Rock. At five to six foot (double overhead) the waves break 150 meters further out and roll through to the inside reef. The back section is named Coulders. Under these conditions, the quality of the waves is still only average. They lack power, some will closeout, and others will have big flat sections. If you get a good one you can weave and turn your way all the way down the line, but it does lack the excitement you’d usually get surfing waves of this size.

The car park and lookout at Bird Rock and Sparrows is on Ocean Boulevard in Jan Juc, if driving westward. If you get to the Bird Rock Café you’ve gone a little bit too far.

If Sparrows and Bird Rock are three foot (headhigh), Winki Pop and Bells will be four to five foot.
