general information
Steps is a good but sometimes fickle right-hand reef break.
Located approx 400 metres west of Sparrows, there is a small gravel car park on Ocean Boulevard. You can’t see the surf from the car park, so it’s best to check it from the lookout at Bird Rock.
From the car park at Steps, it’s a 400m walk down the track to the beach, although there’s actually no beach, it’s just rocks and reef. During winter (June- August), the walk down the track is pure torture on your cold bare feet.
The wave is directly out from the base of the stairs. On smaller swells it is best on low tide. When it’s big and the tide is high, the surf can be good but the waves wash across the rocks at the base of the stairs and smash into the cliff face. Under these conditions, getting out is easy enough, but getting in can be a real problem. Sometimes the best option is to let the current drag you east to Bird Rock or Jan Juc, and come in there.
Ideal conditions for Steps mean four to six foot (almost double overhead) waves and a low tide. The take-offs are easy, and the wall stands up a long way ahead of the white water. The waves have plenty of power and big open faces, ideal for big carves and cutbacks. There are also barrel sections when it’s particularly good.
The waves at Steps and Boobs are usually one to two foot smaller than at Bells and Winki Pop.
Steps doesn’t get classic all that often, but when the planets align and all the elements come together, the surf at Steps will start to pump.
