general information

This beautiful stretch of coastline is the start of a different rulebook of surfing seasons and conditions compared to the Great Ocean Road breaks further east. The spots on the west side of Cape Otway bare the full brunt of the heavy southwest swells with zero protection. If the Torquay coastline is 4-6ft here it can be maxed out at 15-20ft plus and often is. In fact, it's not so much of a game of waiting for the swell to arrive but more like waiting for it to chill out and drop off a bit!! Johanna's is a peaceful and relaxing place out in dairy farming land with few facilities, if you plan to stay here you need to be self sufficient. The surf is punchy and unforgiving and breaks over a series beachy peaks and reefs offering many different break. It's best in about 2 metres of swell in the summer time, in winter you might be waiting a while for the surf and winds to back off.

A lot of people surf here when there is zero surf in the Torquay area. The Rip Curl Pro has been moved here several times due to lack of swell at Bells. I thnk it was the 2003 Rip Curl Pro, the final two days were held here when Bells was 1-2', and it was a good 5' here. Not a place for intermediate surfers or even unfit good surfers. The shorebreak can be quite punishing and then there is a long paddle to the take off zones. Taking off on a wave can be like being shot out of a cannon. The reward is well worth it though - great lefts as well as rights
