general information
Rocky Point is an average left hand point break located at the most northern point of Eagle Bay. Rocky’s is one of the limited surf options during the winter weather pattern of large swell and south-west wind that plagues the region during that time of year.
Rocky Point can peel for 50 to 100 meters with nice walls and speed runs, mixed in with sections shutting down or going fat. The wave accommodates both short and long-boards, for intermediate and advanced surfers.
The Rocky Point car park at Eagle Bay is tucked away in the trees. It’s a 15-20 minute walk to the break. From a distance the surf always looks poor - it’s best to just bite the bullet and get out there.
As you walk to Rocky Point you pass a small and short left-hander called Sludgies. It breaks off a barnacle covered rock, and peels for 10 metres before closing out into the rocks.
If the cold winter weather, average wave quality, and long walk weren’t enough to put you off surfing Rocky Point, maybe this will - it has a reputation for shark sightings. On the plus side, all of these factors combined mean numbers in the water are fairly low, especially if you avoid weekends.
You won’t come in from surfing Rocky Point saying ‘the surf was awesome!’, but you may well have a grin on your face after an enjoying a nice little winter session in between the rain squalls.
