general information
The Farm is located ‘behind the cape’ - on the north-east side of Cape Naturaliste, in Bunker Bay.
A large winter swell, three meters plus, is required for waves to wrap themselves into Bunker Bay. The Farm is offshore in a south-westerly wind, making it one of the few good surf options during the region’s ugly winter months.
The Farm is a right-hander, breaking over sand and patches of reef. It is an easy waves to surf, with slow take-offs and a wall that is not particularly vertical. Like all surf spots, The Farm does have its good days, but the wave is usually littered with fat sections and close-outs. You can make a few turns and carves, if you stay close to the white water.
There is also a left at The Farm, which is a worse version of the right – although it is less crowded.
As The Farm is the most consistent wave in the area during winter, it gets crowded. Long-boards will regularly outnumber all others, making it particularly difficult to get waves. Rather than fighting them, sometimes it’s just easier to join them by pulling out the old Malibu yourself.
If you pay attention to where the wave actually breaks, without getting preoccupied with the pack (who tend to push each other too deep), you will catch plenty of waves.
You can check the surf at The Farm from your car on top of the hill over looking Bunker Bay. There’s now a trendy café in the car park for all the latte-soy-decaf drinkers, which is a shame as it does detracted from the natural beauty of the area. The Farm is located halfway around the bay, a 10 minute walk from the car park.
While it can be frustrating dealing with the average waves and thick crowds at The Farm, you always find yourself going back. After all, it is The Farm that keeps many a surfer sane over the depressing, cold, and almost surf-less, winter months in the south-west of Western Australia.
