general information
Other Side of the Moon is a summer surf spot that picks up the smallest of swells, producing a fun, good quality peak. The wave initially breaks over a shallow reef before peeling left and right across the sand. The Moon, or Lighthouse as some people call it, is a picturesque surf spot, with untouched coastline as far as the eye can see.
The quality of the wave depends on the movement of the sand, but the banks are consistently good. The take-off can be challenging, particularly on low tide. The wave dredges up on the reef creating boils and steps through the face. Once you’ve negotiated the drop, it’s all smooth sailing, as the left and right can be cracked and whacked with a series of turns. As you get to the inside, shallow sections of reef will begin to appear so be cautious.
The beach break just to the south of The Moon can also have nice waves from time to time.
The Moon max’s out at six foot (double overhead) and above – it’s never surfed through winter because it is simply too big. On the other end of the scale, at two foot (waist high) or below it’s too small to break on the reef. The Moon doesn’t handle crowds very well at all, as the take-off zone is quite small.
If Yallingup is so small it’s virtually unsurfable, it’s a good sign there’ll be nice waves up the top end of the Cape, The Moon being the northern most of these locations. The Moon is one and a half kilometre north of Windmills, it has its own car park and requires 15 minutes of walking to get to the beach.
While The Moon isn’t one of the south-west’s premier waves, over summer when the sun is shining, the water is crystal clear, and the swell is small, there aren’t many better places to be than this fun-filled peak at the top of Cape Naturaliste.
