general information

Windmills is a popular summertime surf spot, with consistently good banks breaking over patches of reef. If the swell is too small for Windmills, it’s fair to assume there are no waves anywhere in the south-west.

The wave quality at Windmills depends on the movement of the sand, but generally speaking nice lefts and rights break here and, if the banks are particularly good, there’ll be barrels. Usually it struggles to hold anything larger than four to five foot (over head and a half). There’s no trick to getting in and out of the water, just clamber over the rocks the best you can.

Due to its easy access and close proximity to Dunsborough, Windmills can get crowded, particularly over the Christmas holidays. Over winter the swell is too large for Windmills, and the prominent wind is onshore.

Windmills is located down an unmarked track near the top of Cape Naturaliste. From the lookout at the car park you can also see Other Side of The Moon to the north. To the south of Windmills is Sand Patches, which is a beach break that can get good.

Windmills is a good surf spot that can occasionally get epic when the banks line up.
