general information
The island of Santa Catarina has several waves on offer for the travelling surfer. Joaquina is probably the best know and for good reason. This break is one of the best beach breaks in the world. An enormous supply of marine dunal sand just keeps blowing in to the north of the beach forming consistently good banks. The nearby thriving city of Florianopolis can mean that weekends are very busy but mid week can offer some generally crowd free options along the stretch.
The wave itself is very easy to find. Just follow the main road along the east coast of Santa Catarina. If the crowd factor at the point really isnt doing it for you then take a wlk further south long the beach, chances are you will be able to locate a peak all for yourself.
This break can be very heavy on larger days. Suprisingly the banks often make a good job of a thumping swell though getting out the back can be a morale breaking experience.
A few providers offer specialised surf tours and camps in the area, NEXUS Surf is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable
