general information
The Chiba Peninsula offers the multitude of Tokyo based surfers a wealth of options to consider. The main problem for east coast Japan is swell consistency. Relying on swell trains from the North Pacific alone can be a fickle thing and whilst typhoons can create SE swell activity in summer (Jun-Aug), it can be a long time between waves at times. NE Winter swells drop down via Hawaii landing all around winter (Dec-Feb) somewhat attenuated but with superior consistency.
Habara is one of the better beach breaks in the area but often very crowded. Even on flat days there will be a multitude of some of the most unusually shaped boards you will ever come across in a line up. When it all comes together here however it is a sight to behold. The left hander will often be the better option though there are several reef / rock combos at the extremes of the beach worthy of inspection during a crowd peak. The whole 'don’t drop in thing' hasn’t really reached Habara so expect some serious fun and games when a larger swell rolls into town. Boards flying in all directions, bodies rolling the other and three guys going over fused together and to the lip with their leg ropes wrapped around their waists...BAM!
