general information
Schitovaya Bukhta (Shield Bay) lies just to the east of Vladivostok and represents the tip of surf discovery along the Eastern Pacific shores of Russia. At the time of writing this, the local surf community in the area has advised Surfing Atlas that special permits may soon be required to surf in this area due to the close proximity of several restricted military areas. There are several options further afield however should this become a definite ruling. Surfing Atlas will be conducting a dedicated tour of this region in the near future to unearth some of the many unriden and even un-named surf breaks in this area.
The wave itself at Schitovaya Bukhta is a superior beachbreak, very dependent on SW swell within the Sea of Japan. Typhoon season is your best bet for quality swell in the area (Dec-Feb). The more South in the swell the better, the southern point here will begin to work in any swell over 1.5 metres and hold anything up to 4 metres. A fat right hander with an easy take off that sprints into a fast beachbreak barrell before closing out horribly right on the beach. Bring a spare pair of fins here as it may be difficult to buy a replacement set in Vladivostok.
