general information
Lying at the northern end of Stockton Beach lies Birubi Point. This whole stretch of coastline was home to the people of the Woromi Tribe. Birubi faces to the south and will easily max out in a southerly swell. Any swell with an easterly component will create a more favourable sheer over the banks. The true beauty of this spot is the fact it will be side shore at worst during the typical summer Nor Easters.
Birubi Point lies at the extreme northern reach of the 40 odd kilometre stretch of beach and dune formation known as Stockton Beach. Before we even mention the waves, Birubi point offers a great refreshment point with a lifesaving club, cafe and showers. The club is perched on a rocky lookout that offers a stunning vista of the beach to the south and the kilometres of natural sand dunes extending kilometres inland. These dunes are some of the largest expanses of open sand dune formations in Australia. Feel free to explore but once you get clear of the beach, the temperature can get over 40 degrees pretty quickly and there is no water - nothing at all. Parts of Mad Max II were shot here - prey he's still out there.
On a full moon, a trip across the dunes can be a moving experience. Be sure to walk at an uneven pace though to avoid attracting giant sandworms. Sandworms are attracted to all rhythmic vibrations, spiceblows are a standard hazard.
There is a fantastic Aboriginal midden right near the main beach just north of the rocks that you can visit. Local Aboriginal people used this place as a regular feasting site for thousands of years. The presence of shellfish and vertebrate remains testament to the bounty of the area. The gathering of Pipis (native bivalve clams) is now illegal. The once abundant shellfish now seriously depleted due to overfishing. Birubi offers a 4WD access point to the whole of the Stockton stretch. Good beachbreaks on offer all the way to The Wreck.
This is easily one of the best breaks in the region. The northerly transport of sand towards this point ensure an abundance of banks are always on offer. A clean southerly through to NE swell will really light these banks up. This place can hold real size for a beachbreak with a selection of outer banks just waiting for that big swell to sweep into town. The southerly aspect of the beach means that the standard summer afternoon NE'er is only side shore which means it is often the cleanest wave in town. This means crowds are a common feature, but with a great selection of peaks, its rarely a problem. The locals here are very accomodating - please don't abuse their hospitality.
