general information
Evgenia is beautiful but difficult to reach wave, breaking at her best on only the most perfect of clean SW swells. This spot was pionered by a young naval officer who spent a year living on the island in the 1990's. Supposedly the young officer was restricted to staying on Garden Island one wekend during the middle of a major SW swell event, he walked along the western coast of the island in search of a wave and came across this reef after about 10 kilometres.
The story goes that he surfed the break solo for 6 hours before leaving the water at dusk and returning the 10 kilometre walk. Next day, same swell, same tides he went back but the break was sectioning, closing out and spilling across the reef. Later hydrographic anaylis revealed the wave to be due onde - that is requiring two waves. Evgenia requires a rare NW swell component that competes with the dominant SW swell train and forces it to reach critical mass far earlier to create a rideable peaking wave. Taker away one swell vector and it all falls away. What was missing on that second day was the secondary NW swell train.
A very rare and beatiful wave, surfed maybe less than a dozen times in history. This is rare surf indeed.
