general information

Named in honour of the active shield volcano of the same name, Karthala is still very much an underground discovery and quite frankly, one of the longest left handers in the world. Ideally set up for longboarders, the break requires a well formed southerly swell to thread it's way through the Mozambique channel to the south before rippling along the reef and and shelf adjacent to the point, itself an extinct volcanic formation.

The break fortunately requires little swell to get it moving which is fortunate due to the less than ideal shadowing courtesy of nearby Madagascar to the south. Several other quality reef breaks to the north warrant further investigation in larger and rarer southerly swells.
