general information
Bunbury Bunbury isn’t known for its surf however it does have waves and you can surf there. During winter there is regular swell although wave quality is often average. The surf in Bunbury is considerably smaller than that down south as the swell is blocked by Cape Naturalist. Strangely the water is also colder in Bunbury than down south. Over summer there is no surf in Bunbury. Once winter arrives the cold fronts strip the sand off the beach creating banks. The large winter swells find their way around the Cape and into Bunbury producing surf. Then when summer begins again the sand washes back up onto the beach, the banks and swell disappear, and the cycle starts all over again. The most consistent surf in Bunbury is found at Back Beach along Ocean Drive. The waves are best on the 1km stretch of beach from the surf club to the patch of reef to the south called Whippies. The beachies here are often dumpy and shut down quickly. Further north along Casuarina Drive is a stretch of reef known as BP’s. The surf is smaller here although the reef can create better shaped waves. North of BP’s is a groyne a righthander will occasionally break off. There are two good backpackers in Bunbury. Wonder Inn is on Clifton Street and is usually lively and good fun. Dolphin Backpackers in on Wellington Street and is a bit more cruisy and relaxed. They are both located in prime locations close the town and the beach. You’d never travel to Bunbury for the surf, however if you’re in town it is worth checking the waves. Every so often when the swell is up, the wind is offshore, and the banks are good - the waves will start firing in ‘Bunno’. BT
