Long Beach is a picturesque beach break in the town of Kommetjie. The surf is easily accessed and the waves are user friendly making it very popular amongst the locals. Long Beach is offshore in a southerly wind, which is odd as the swell also comes from a southerly direction. For swell to reach the beach it must wrap around a headland then go through the kelp beds, this reduces the size of the waves, but increase the quality of the swell breaking on the beach. The waves at Long Beach break left and right, take-offs are easy and the waves peel relatively slowly. Further down the beach is a right hand shore break popular with surfers getting their photos taken for magazines. Kommetjie is an ideal place for surfers to base themselves, as it is close to many of the quality waves in the Cape Town area, both on the east and west sides of the Cape. Accommodation wise your best bet is to stay at Chill ‘N’ Surf located between Kommetjie and Hout Bay (5 minutes form Long Beach). As the name suggest, it is a great place to just chill out, surf, and enjoy the view. In the original Endless Summer movie they surf at Long Beach in board-shorts, this makes anyone who has ever surfed Long Beach cringe in pain because the water is absolutely freezing. BT
