NW swell on the west coast is only possible when a typhoon system plants itself between Japan and China in the Sea of Japan and commences drilling down towards the core of the Earth. It happens, but you would be better advised to base yourself on the more reliable east coast and then deploy to the west coast when theres a typhoon in town.
