general information
Easily one of the best waves in the south Pacific. The oh so delicate problem of course is that you can only surf this wave if you are staying at the resort on the hotel. Sunday is the changeover day which means that there is a grey area about who gets to surf there.
There is a corruptable local lottery about who gets to go surfing on that day so pay well and you could be in with a shot. The biggest problem is actually getting to stay at the resort. Rooms are limited and mostly American surfers (American resort owner too) have the place booked years in advance right through the season. You will probably be able to get a vacancy in December / January which is the wet season with very rare SW swell only - thanks but no thanks. The whole deal with the Mamanucas is that it's all or nothing.
The alignment of the outer reefs means that unless the swell is dead SW then your options are always going to be limited. If your not staying at either Tavarua or Namotu then Wilkes Passage will be your best bet...thats where everyone else staying at the other resorts will be surfing as well.
