general information
Fickle but very special break located at the start of the central coast across Broken Bay from Palm Beach. The wave is a powerful left hander that runs beside the Box Head headland over a sand bank that can yield super long rides. Potentially we're talking 1 km plus. However this sort of glory does not come easy, the wave breaks a few kilometres off Umina Beach and can be accessed by paddling from there. Another option is catching the ferry from Palm Beach to Ettalong and heading out from there, either way requires bionic arms. It requires a large south east swell to break.
The wave breaks towards towards the mouth of Brisbane Waters, so tidal streams can also help or hinder this paddle. Certainly don't want the outgoing tide while you're trying to paddle back in after a multi-hour session. Best bet is catch a lift or to take your own boat out there. Hazards here come in the form of sharks and pesky jetskis. For more of an orienteering challenge, you may want to take the long hike through Bouddi National Park.
