general information

The entire north fringing reef of Johnston Atoll has several breaks and passes which offer quality surf, the secret is surfing the one that best corresponds to the swell direction. Epsilon 4 is probably the most consistent as it is open to swell from the W through to the NE though a solid swell from the N will generate the most critical rides. you will need an ocean capable vessel and permission from the US Fisheries and Wildlife Service to surf here. The living coral reef is razor sharp, no one really has enough experience here to claim to know how far towards low you can surf here but try mid tide for starters and proceed with caution from there. Just remember that you are basically in the middle of the Pacific Ocean here on a deserted island - surf appropriately.
