general information
You're going to need help to get out here. Not just in the form of a boat that can take you 30K's offshore but help in locating the rideable sections of the waves out here. A small and dedicated band of surfers from the 1770 / Agnes Waters area ply the southern reefs of the coast here and act as custodians for what is really a virtually untouched frontier of Australian surfing. Agnes Waters marks the northern most point of direct swell action against beach on east coast Australia and the area isn't totally reliant on cyclone swell. From here north the Great Barrier Reef kicks in and local knowledge becomes king. Only a tiny portion of the Great Barrier Reef has been explored for it's surfing potential but what has been reliably surfed has resulted in the likes of Fitzroy Reef and Cookie's Place slowly drifting onto surfing radars. There is still so much to do.
Your best bet is to go to the Reef 2 Beach Surf Shop in 1770 and buy a ton of gear from the guys there. Add a few cases of XXXX Bitter onto the tab and they might...just might give you a few pointers. Try to catch Fitzroy when it's small for your first trip as jumping straight into 10 foot peeling reefbreak 30 kilometres offshore without a local guide could be pushing your limits.
This area of the Australian coastline has many surfers very excited at the discoveries likely to be made in the future, whilse your waiting for 'that swell' to arrive, the towns of Agnes Waters and 1770 will keep you entertained with quality beach and point breaks. The boys at Reef2Beach surf should be able to hook you up with a charter to get you out there.
