general information
A long line of three beaches to the north of Newquay separated by rocky outcrops. These beaches all join to make one long beach at low tide. They are all of a similar quality and can get similarly crowded. To the north of the three is Tolcarne, followed by Great Western slightly further south, then Towan which is right next to harbour near the town centre. They can occasionally get good banks but with size and if the swell is super clean they tend to close out a lot. Mid tide can be better in a big swell when lefts and rights break off the rocky outcrops but this also focuses the crowds onto these spots. There is a fairly good left peels off the harbour wall in the biggest of winter swells, but as this can be the only surfable wave in these conditions the whole of Newquays surf population heads there.
Above the harbour is the Red Lion pub which overlooks these beaches and is a good vantage point to have a few post surf beers and take in the Newquay atmosphere. It does good pub food too for the after surf munchies!!
